Agriculture and Food Minister Kim Chance today announced the formation of a Gascoyne community committee to enable local input into the expansion of horticultural production in the region.

Mr Chance said the potential of the Gascoyne region as one of the State’s major food producers was enormous and would be an important factor in safeguarding Western Australia’s future food supplies.

The Minister said the Carnarvon Community Reference Group would be chaired by the Member for Mining and Pastoral Region, Vince Catania MLC, and would be supported by the Gascoyne Development Commission.

“Other members of the committee include representatives from the Gascoyne Growers Association, Gascoyne Water Cooperative and the Shire of Carnarvon,” he said.

The Minister is encouraging local growers and the wider community to use the reference group to raise any issues or ideas about the potential expansion of the Carnarvon horticultural area.

“I look forward to receiving feedback from the committee and I am confident its recommendations will help to maximise benefits from future development,” he said.

Mr Chance said information would be provided to the reference group by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Department of Water, Gascoyne Development Commission and the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.

The committee will report to the Minister for Agriculture and Food and the Minister for Water.
