Three intersections will be upgraded on South Western Highway following a consultative process with the Byford community.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister, Alannah MacTiernan announced today that Downer EDI Works had been awarded a $971,000 contract to carry out the intersection improvement works.
Ms MacTiernan said that works would be funded under the Supplementary Road Safety Improvement Program and would include modifications to the intersections of:
· South Western Highway/Beenyup Road/Abernethy Road;
· South Western Highway/Clara Street, and
· South Western Highway/Pitman Way.
“The upgrade works will not only improve safety at these intersections but will also improve traffic flow and efficiency,” the Minister said.
“Traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and improved turning lanes will be installed at the four-way intersection of South Western Highway, Abernethy Road and Beenyup Road.
“In addition, modifications will also be made at the Clara Street and Pitman Way intersections with South Western Highway to allow southbound traffic to turn right into Pitman Way.”
The contract is due to commence in September 2008, with work estimated to be completed by Christmas.
The work will be managed by the Main Roads Metropolitan Region.
