Construction of Stage Two of the Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor is on course to begin by the end of this year, continuing the Labor Government’s massive investment in Mid-West infrastructure.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister, Alannah MacTiernan said Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd had been selected as the preferred proponent to design and construct the final 8.7km section from North West Coastal Highway to the airport access road.

“This project will increase road safety and efficiency on a vitally important freight link between Geraldton Port and the Mid-West’s mining and agricultural areas east of the city,” Ms MacTiernan said.

“Contracts are expected to be signed in August  and construction to begin by the end of the year, with the road open to traffic in early 2010.

“The project includes constructing new connections with Geraldton/Walkaway Road, Goulds Road, Deepdale Road and the airport access road.

“It will also be designed to enable future intersections with the proposed ‘Road B’ (also known as Verita Road) into the Mt Tarcoola area and the proposed North-South Route.”

Geraldton MLA Shane Hill said he was delighted to see that the much anticipated $58million project was on schedule.

“This direct east-west link to the Geraldton Port and alternative route for freight vehicles is scheduled for completion when port operations are predicted to reach peak activity, with the shipping of an estimated 11 million tonnes of iron ore in 2010,” Mr Hill said.

“The project will improve the access, safety and efficiency of the road transport industry at a time when it will be most needed.”

Ms MacTiernan said a consultative working group, which included representatives from other Government agencies, City of Geraldton-Greenough, Main Roads regional staff and interested user groups, had met on seven occasions over the past two years to discuss project objectives, design constraints and community concerns.

Community consultation with directly affected residents and the wider community commenced in February 2008 and would continue during the contract through a Construction Reference Group, which would be formed shortly.

The Minister welcomed Abigroup to its first major contract for the Western Australian Government.

“We have been working hard across government to encourage more large civil construction companies to WA and create more competition in the sector,” she said.

Abigroup, which has successfully delivered of some of Australia’s biggest road infrastructure projects, is now establishing a presence in WA.

It has teamed with Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) as the designer and other specialist consultants for the Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor Stage Two Project.
