Construction of a new $17.5million, two-lane bridge over Lake Raeside, 10km south of Leonora on the Goldfields Highway, will begin in a few weeks.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan, who today announced that Ertech Pty Ltd had been awarded the contract for works, said the project included reconstruction and realignment of eight kilometres of the Goldfields Highway surrounding the bridge.
“The works will replace the existing bridge, which is often subject to lengthy closure due to flooding,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Obviously, road closures have a significant economic impact on the northern Goldfields communities when road and mining freight is held up, not to mention the significant inconvenience for local commuters.
“The new bridge and roadworks will increase road safety and provide an improved level of service for road users crossing Lake Raeside.”
The Minister said the priority for the contractor was to complete the bridge and road works ahead of the next cyclone season.
The project would be managed by Main Roads Western Australia Goldfields-Esperance Region. Works were scheduled to commence by the end of July and would be completed in early March 2009.
