Plans for a new multi-purpose stadium at Subiaco would underpin Western Australia’s support for a national bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Sport and Recreation Minister John Kobelke said today.
Mr Kobelke, who attended a meeting of Federal and State sports ministers in Canberra, said WA was very supportive of Australia’s efforts to secure the global event.
“We are very strongly behind the Australian bid,” he said.
“The bidding process is in its initial stages and a lot of work is still to be done, but we believe it is worth putting in a real effort because the benefit to WA and Australia would be many billions of dollars.
“With our new stadium due to be fully completed by 2016, it would provide a very attractive part of our bid and ensure Western Australia was receiving a fair share of World Cup games.”
The Minister said he used the opportunity of the meeting to update the Federal Government on the progress of construction of the new multi-purpose stadium.
