Susan Barrera has been appointed the Director General of the new Department for Communities.
Communities Minister Sue Ellery said Ms Barrera, who had been acting in the position for the past ten weeks, was an excellent choice for the role, bringing to it extensive experience in both the public and private sectors.
“Ms Barrera has a strong background in State Government labour relations, strategy and policy, and has also worked in local government and as a consultant in the private sector,” Ms Ellery said.
“Her most recent appointment was labour relations executive director at the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection, a position she held for two years until March 2008.
“Earlier in her career, Ms Barrera worked in a variety of roles in the Government departments of productivity and labour relations, prisons and the public service commission.”
The Minister said Ms Barrera had also worked as a consultant in the private sector for five years, specialising in employment, organisational development, training, and equity and diversity projects.
Born and raised in Western Australia, Ms Barrera was a councillor with the City of Subiaco from 1986 to 1995 and had a Master of Business Administration from The University of WA.
“I am confident that Ms Barrera will lead the newly-formed Department for Communities and guide its strategic vision with great ability,” she said.
