Parliament House hosts its first playgroup

Parliament House was inundated with small children today when 15 families gathered in the Centenary Room to celebrate National Playgroup Week.

Communities Minister Sue Ellery hosted the two-hour playgroup session in which children aged up to five years and their parents enjoyed participating in a range of fun and educational activities.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to show the State Government’s support for playgroups and to demonstrate that they are not only fun but also play an important role in the community,” Ms Ellery said.

“More than 15,000 Western Australian families are involved in about 500 playgroups throughout the State, all helping to support children’s social, language, physical and intellectual development.

“The Carpenter Government believes strongly in investing in the early years of a child’s life and provides Playgroup WA with more than $67,000 each year for intergenerational playgroups.

“These playgroups are an opportunity for seniors to interact with young children and their parents in a fun environment.  Research shows that this interaction strengthens a child’s cognitive skills and learning ability and helps prevent seniors from becoming lonely.”

National Playgroup Week is an annual event to celebrate and promote playgroups within the community.  Playgroup WA will be hosting a range of activities between April 27 and May 3.

Playgroup WA chief executive officer Debbie Terelinck said the theme this year of Learning through Play would remind families and the broader community of the importance of children having fun.

“Playgroup in Parliament House allows decision-makers in our communities to see just how crucial a learning-through-play environment is for families with young children,” Ms Terelinck said.
