Western Australian Small Business Minister Margaret Quirk has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that minimum salary levels (MSLs) for temporary skilled overseas workers would increase by 3.8 per cent from August 1.

Federal Immigration and Citizenship Minister Senator Chris Evans has announced an increase to the current standard MSL from $41,850 to $43,440 per year.

This rise will apply to new temporary skilled migrants coming to work in Australia, as well as those already in the workforce who are subject to an MSL.

Ms Quirk said the announcement endorsed the position that was introduced by the WA Government’s involvement at the National Working Party level.

“Despite the pressing need for change, this issue was ignored by the previous Federal Government,” she said.

“The State Government has long campaigned to enshrine protection for both local and imported labour.

“I welcome the added protections for Australian and migrant workers and congratulate the Federal Minister on his initiative.”
