Small Business Minister Margaret Quirk today congratulated the Mid-West Chamber of Commerce and Industry on its skills attraction initiative promoted through the Go West Now program.
Ms Quirk said the ‘Geraldton Opportunities’ campaign was a major part of the Go West Now careers expo held by the Small Business Development Corporation in Sydney last weekend.
“Geraldton and the Mid-West have obvious attractions, making it easy to sell this campaign,” she said.
“I was particularly impressed by the energy, professionalism and enthusiasm displayed by Chamber of Commerce and Industry in capitalising on this chance to promote Geraldton.
“The Geraldton Opportunities promotion was very popular with visitors to the expo in Sydney, and will no doubt be successful in attracting many skilled personnel to live and work in the Mid-West.
“The Mid-West is a booming area with a very sound future in the technology, resources and fishing industries. About $75million has been allocated in the 2008-09 Budget for capital works in this region.
“Major road, gas, water, power and construction projects are planned, together with the redevelopment of the Geraldton foreshore and refurbishments to the Geraldton Batavia Coast Marina, and these projects will need a strong, reliable workforce to see them to fruition.”
The Minister said the Mid West Chamber of Commerce was doing a great job in promoting the work and lifestyle opportunities in the Mid-West region to skilled workers from the Eastern States.
The Go West Now career expos will be held in:
· Melbourne: May 16 and 17
· Brisbane: May 23 and 24
· Auckland, NZ: August 7 and 9
· Christchurch, NZ: August 11 and 12.
