Goldfields-Esperance Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich announced today that the State Government would provide $10,000 to the popular Discover the Round week-long festival in September.
The festival, designed to support the annual horse racing and pacing round in Kalgoorlie, will be held from Sunday, September 7 to Saturday, September 13.
It will include activities such as a ball, rodeo, world two-up championships, a concert and a market day.
“The Discover the Round festival is a great community event, catering to all ages and interests,” Ms Ravlich said.
“The event is expected to attract thousands of visitors and generate strong media coverage, providing a great opportunity to boost tourism and showcase the region.
“It will allow many people to experience the range of attractions this region has to offer, and many of these people will have such a great time, that they’ll be back for more at a later date.”
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said that the State Government had invested more than $200,000 for 13 popular local festivals and sporting events across regional Western Australia as part of the 2008-09 Regional Events Scheme.
“At the last election, we committed $1million over four years for regional events,” Ms McHale said.
“These events encourage visitors, inject money into the local economy, generate media coverage and build community pride.”
Round two of the 2008-09 Regional Events Scheme is now open and applications close at 5pm on Friday, August 15 for events being held in the first half of 2009.
