Residential land purchases more accessible to locals in South Hedland

    4/04/2008 12:00 AM

Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts today announced the release of 114 building lots priced from $115,000 for sale in South Hedland.

“The lots represent a great opportunity for first homebuyers and owner-occupiers to purchase affordable land to build new homes in South Hedland,” Mrs Roberts said.

Located across five subdivisions, the lots are being developed under the Department of Housing and Works’ (DHW) New Living Urban Renewal Project’s land development program.

“Initially the lots will be sold by public ballot to owner-occupiers with first homebuyers to be given preference to 50 per cent of the lots,” Mrs Roberts said.

Any lots not sold in the first round will be offered to owner-occupiers who will be required to commence construction within 36 months.

After the second round, remaining lots would then be offered for purchase to the general public and investors with a requirement to commence construction within 12 months.

“Successful land buyers will be offered a $7,000 fencing and landscaping incentive,” Ms Roberts said.

Central Kimberley-Pilbara MLA Tom Stephens welcomed the Minister’s announcement and said that the lots would help ease the demand for land in Port and South Hedland.

“The land release will not only satisfy our immediate need for land, it is another step to ensure the further growth of North-West towns that support Western Australia’s expanding resources industry,”  Mr Stephens said.
