Treasurer tables independent report on South-West water tariffs

Treasurer Eric Ripper today tabled a report by the independent Economic Regulation Authority (ERA) into Busselton and Bunbury Water Board tariffs.

Mr Ripper said the report was part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to making transparent, accountable and responsible decisions regarding water and wastewater pricing.

The Government asked the ERA to inquire into the tariffs as part of its 2008-09 Budget planning.

This move was consistent with the Government’s commitment to implement the National Water Initiative, which requires an independent regulator to either set or review water prices.

“Our State’s drying climate and the unprecedented growth in the demand for water, from both residential and industrial users, means it is crucial to ensure appropriate pricing for water to help save the precious resource and to encourage water-saving technology,” the Treasurer said.

Earlier this year, Mr Ripper tabled the ERA’s annual inquiry into the Water Corporation’s tariffs, which are being considered as part of the 2008 Budget process.

The Government will also consider the recommendations on water tariffs for the Bunbury and Busselton Water Boards shortly.
