State Government welcomes income management trial in Western Australia

    28/02/2008 12:00 AM

Indigenous Affairs Minister Michelle Roberts has welcomed the Rudd Government’s income management trial in parts of regional Western Australia, including the Kimberley.

“Quarantining welfare payments is a genuine approach for the families of children who are at risk of abuse or neglect,” Mrs Roberts said.

The Minister said the income management trial was consistent with Coroner Alastair Hope’s recommendations following his inquest into 22 drug and alcohol-related deaths in the Kimberley.

“This is an example of the effective working relationship the State and Federal Governments have established to tackle major indigenous issues.”

Mrs Roberts also applauded those indigenous communities in WA that were looking at voluntary income management to ensure money was spent on essentials such as food, clothing and accommodation, rather than alcohol.
