Indigenous Affairs Minister Michelle Roberts said the State Government welcomed Coroner Alastair Hope’s findings, following his inquest into the drug and alcohol-related deaths of 22 Aboriginal people in the Kimberley.

“We will consider the Coroner’s findings carefully and continue our painstaking work to improve the lives of indigenous Western Australians,” Mrs Roberts said.

The Minister said WA had embarked on a new era of Indigenous Affairs, following the Prime Minister’s apology to the Stolen Generations on February 13.

“Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has put indigenous issues front and centre,” she said.

“The State Government is committed to working with the Federal Government to achieve positive changes for indigenous Australians.”

Mrs Roberts said the State Government had put significant resources and hard work into improving the lives of indigenous Western Australians.

“The State Government has already made significant headway in indigenous housing, health and education, but more needs to be done,” she said.
