    A new committee for Victoria Quay will ensure better integrated and more transparent planning for future non-port activities at Fremantle Port.

    Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the WA Planning Commission had agreed to establish a specifically focussed committee to provide strategic advice on such projects.

    The committee would include:

    ·         WAPC chairman Jeremy Dawkins;

    ·         Fremantle Port Authority chairman;

    ·         Mayor of Fremantle Peter Tagliaferri;

    ·         Executive Director Tourism WA Richard Muirhead; and

    ·         Richard Longley as a community representative.

    “Victoria Quay has always played a crucial role in Fremantle’s growth and development,” Ms MacTiernan said.

    “Now, with port cargo operations concentrated on North Quay, it is doing so as a tourism attraction and enhancement of the city’s commercial capacity.

    “However, it is vital that in developing this role, the ambience and built form that gives Fremantle’s west end its unique appeal is maintained.

    “This new sub-committee will provide Fremantle Port’s management with relevant planning and tourism expertise and advice to supplement its capacities in managing its freight, shipping and export development activities.

    “It will have an advisory role in planning activities on all parts of Victoria Quay which are not specifically used for port business.”

    The Minister has also asked the WAPC to include in the committee’s coverage the Public Transport Authority’s land around the Fremantle railway station.
