Housing and Works and Heritage Minister Michelle Roberts has welcomed the announcement by Federal Environment, Heritage and Arts Minister Peter Garrett, that Fremantle Prison would be nominated for the World Heritage List.

“Fremantle prison is a priceless part of Western Australia’s history,” Mrs Roberts said.

“In the past 12 months, more than 175,000 people have visited the historic prison.”

The Minister said Mr Garrett’s announcement started a wonderful journey for Fremantle prison as part of the serial nomination of Australian convict sites.

The State Government recognises the importance of the historic prison, spending $2million to restore the western elevation of the main cell block to its original built form.

“It is a fantastic asset to the State and to the nation,” Mrs Roberts said.

“Now we hope that the world will see it that way too.”
