Gascoyne Minister Jon Ford today announced the opening of Round 8 for the Gascoyne Development Commission’s Regional Development Scheme.

Mr Ford said that up to $500,000 would be available for grants ranging between $5,000 and $150,000 for selected projects.

“This grant scheme supports projects that help make regions like the Gascoyne healthy, safe and enjoyable places to live, offering expanded educational and employment opportunities for residents and a high standard of services,” he said.

“We have been able to support more than $2.9million worth of projects from this scheme since it began in the Gascoyne.”

The Minister said local government authorities, voluntary and community organisations based in the Gascoyne could be eligible for funding.

Interested organisations can submit an expression of interest by March 12, 2008 and selected applicants will be invited to submit full applications for funding. Approvals are expected to be made in the 2008-09 financial year.

In the past, the scheme has funded impressive initiatives including Carnarvon’s Land Backed Wharf, an ArtsWA officer for the Gascoyne, Exmouth’s Lighthouse development, jetty improvements, an arboretum, World War II trail, whale centre and a kayak trail, and a new sea rescue vessel for Coral Bay and Carnarvon Sea Search and Rescue groups.

Projects that contribute to making the Gascoyne a better place to live economically, socially and environmentally, are particularly encouraged,” North West Coastal MLA Fred Riebeling said.

“Staff at the Gascoyne Development Commission are keen to work closely with applicants in developing eligible projects and assisting with the application process.

“The Carpenter Government is ensuring regional Western Australia receives its fair share.”
