State-owned and operated Hillarys Boat Harbour has been named the best marina in Western Australia at the annual marine industry awards.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the accolade recognised the success of the Government’s recent transformation of the facility with a $9million enhancement program over the past four years.
“There has been major improvements at Hillarys Boat Harbour, including changes to the southern car park, the extension of the western breakwater, the construction of the northern access path and the replacement of E-Jetty,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Last year’s completion of a $1.5million landscaping project to upgrade the harbour’s northern beach area, has made it a more family-friendly picnic area, as well as the recent upgrade and expansion of toilet facilities, which have also significantly added to the appeal of the harbour.”
The Minister said the award also recognised the State Government’s excellent day-to-day management of the facility.
“As the State’s recreational and commercial fleets grow, there is increasing pressure on maritime facilities such as Hillarys Boat Harbour,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Hillarys is the State’s busiest recreational harbour, catering for more than 700 vessels and in excess of four million visitors each year.
“The harbour is an important part of the northern suburbs of Perth, with its commercial operations providing an economic contribution to the State and its appeal to families making it a popular meeting place for the local community.”
The Minister said ongoing stages of the Hillarys Boat Harbour Enhancement Program included the replacement of D-Jetty and further landscaping upgrades which were scheduled for spring this year.
