Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan has strongly welcomed the successful conviction of two adults responsible for defacing public property with tags and graffiti.

The pair was arrested while travelling on the new Perth-Mandurah Railway line, carrying graffiti tools.

Ms MacTiernan said she was confident that continuing co-operation between the Western Australia Police and public transport staff would help trap more such offenders.

“This should send a strong message that our trains aren’t safe havens for those who destroy and deface public assets,” she said.

“PTA officers are watching, both directly and through our world-class CCTV network, and will share that information with police and provide any other help they can.

“Tagging and scratching are costing millions of dollars across our bus and rail network - money that could be spent providing more services - so we give a high priority to catching and convicting offenders.

“Last year, we dealt with 311 offenders and we are developing new tactics to increase our success.

“We need to make it clear that this self-indulgent activity is not creative self-expression, but an affront to most Western Australians who want to enjoy the public facilities for which they have paid.”
