WA young people shine at the Positive Image Award

    7/12/2007 8:52 AM

High school students across Western Australia were today recognised for their efforts in promoting a positive image of young people at the 2007 Positive Image Awards.

Youth Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich praised the 29 district ambassadors of the awards at a presentation ceremony at Government House this morning.

“These young people are being recognised for promoting a positive image of young people within the community,” Ms Ravlich said.

“The efforts of these quiet achievers can often go unacknowledged as society tends to focus on the academic or sporting achievements of students.

“Each young person here today has displayed personal attributes which foster a more positive appreciation of young people and in turn, improve the public’s perception of them.”

Common traits among all the district ambassadors include working through adversity to achieve their goals, helping other students without expectation of reward or recognition and making a commitment to social issues within their communities.

Following the ceremony, students will take part in a day of activities, including a tour of Scitech, lunch in King’s Park, a pre-release movie screening and a twilight trip on the Sail Training Ship Leeuwin.

This is the 10th year the awards have been held and a record 123 nominations were received.

The Positive Image Award was developed in 1998 to tackle negative perceptions of youth in the media and adult community.
