Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts today welcomed the results of yesterday’s (December 13) public ballot for land in South Hedland.

“It was a great success, with 31 of the 35 lots sold,” Mrs Roberts said.

“A total of 12 were sold to first homebuyers, with the remaining 19 lots being purchased by owner-occupiers.

“The significant percentage of first homebuyers demonstrates the success of the South Hedland Urban Renewal project in providing opportunities for first time homebuyers to get into the market.”

Purchasers were predominantly from the Hedland area, with 20 lots being sold to local residents. Of the 32 buyers who registered, only one purchaser did not secure a block as the lot preferences they had selected had been secured by purchasers drawn earlier in the ballot.

The Minister said the value of the lots sold totalled $2,797,500, with prices ranging from $85,000 to $100,000.

“The average price per block was approximately $90,250,” she said.

“This is excellent value as it also included a $7,000 landscaping and fencing incentive.”

The four remaining lots will be sold on the open market, with marketing to be conducted by local real estate agents Ray White South Hedland.

South Hedland New Living is a key part of the State Government’s commitment to revitalising and renewing the South Hedland area.

“Working in partnership with the Town of Port Hedland, the State Government is investing more than $50million over the next five years to improve community infrastructure, streetscapes and amenities in South Hedland,” Mrs Roberts said.

“Further lots are being developed and will be released to provide more housing options to meet the huge demand being fuelled by the resources industry.

“Hundreds of public housing properties will be refurbished and either retained as quality, affordable public housing or will provide further home ownership opportunities.

“Through South Hedland New Living, the State Government is working to build a stronger, more sustainable and vibrant South Hedland community.”
