    Successful applicants announced for first round of Pilbara Regional Development Scheme 2007-08

    Pilbara Minister Jon Ford has announced that 15 projects aimed at delivering positive outcomes for Pilbara residents will receive grants totalling $578,287.88 through the State Government’s 2007-08 Pilbara Regional Development Scheme.

    “These projects will go a long way to enhance infrastructure in the Pilbara community, encourage development and promotion of the region, as well as expand art and culture activities,” Mr Ford said.

    “I’m looking forward to seeing the many diverse benefits that will flow from these projects.”

    These State Government-funded projects, which will be administered by the Pilbara Development Commission, are:
    • Newman State Emergency Services Inc - to assist with funding for the fabrication and installation of a vertical rescue tower for training and the development of a training and accommodation centre - $60,000;
    • Pilbara Railways Historical Society - to assist with costs associated with upgrading the Pilbara Railways Historical Society’s storage and office facilities - $72,800;
    • Yandeyarra Remote Community School - to conduct a two-day sporting/physical activity carnival for all remote community schools in the Pilbara region - $15,519.10;
    • Cooke Point Rec Club - funding to fully carpet the Rec Clubs ground floor area - $11,500;
    • Newman Neighbourhood Centre Inc - to assist with funding to extend the current building by adding another room and creating a new entrance into the office. Other improvements will include the provision of roll-on turf, reticulation, a paved area and shade sails - $53,074;
    • Shire of Ashburton - to assist progress stage two of the Onslow Community Garden Project - $56,702.71;
    • Shire of Ashburton - the relocation of the softball/teeball diamond to the opposite end of Tjiluna Oval in Tom Price - $43,860;
    • Port Hedland Yacht Club - to assist in funding the installation of shade sails over new space age play equipment - $23,287.50;
    • Shire of East Pilbara - to develop sustainable career pathways for Martu people in the East Pilbara Region in the area of arts and cultural management - $49,980;
    • Karratha Youth Theatre - the provision of a number of workshops leading up to a staged musical production for the Karratha Community at the end of 2008 - $20,000;
    • Baptist Union of Western Australia - to assist in funding an outdoor shaded playground at the Hedland Baptist Church - $14,354;
    • Anglican Parish of Port Hedland - to provide a fully fenced-off play area, which includes rubber matting and outdoor play equipment, providing a safe environment for the children attending the church - $8,250;
    • East Pilbara Independence Support Inc - funding to complete the centre’s new storage room and the laundry area at Jigalong Aboriginal Community - $41,070;
    • Rose Nowers Childcare Centre Inc - the installation of new playgroup equipment and the purchase of toys - $51,187.85; and
    • Shire of Ashburton - to provide shade over playground equipment in Onslow - $56,702.72.
