Fashion parades, fire engines and fun activities are highlights of the Shire of Kalamunda’s annual celebration of its senior community members today.

Opening the ‘Seniors Lifestyle Expo and Art and Craft Exhibition’, Seniors Minister Sue Ellery said the event was one of more than 120 events being held across the State to mark BankWest Seniors Week.

“The expo will show seniors how they can get more involved in events and activities in the Kalamunda region, and encourage them to become active participants in their local communities,” Ms Ellery said.

“This annual event is one of the biggest in the BankWest Seniors Week calendar and is very popular, not only with the residents of the Kalamunda region, but also with seniors from far and wide.

“Up to 3,000 people are expected to make the trip here today, with highlights of the day including a fashion parade, art and craft displays, vintage fire engines, exhibitions, and entertainment by local primary school children.

“There is plenty of information about local clubs and recreational opportunities available to seniors, and BankWest has offered a $250 cash account for one lucky visitor.”

The expo runs from 10am to 3pm at Hartfield Park Recreation Centre in Forrestfield.

Ms Ellery said events across WA this week aimed to encourage participation and activity among older people, create a community feel, and recognise the valuable contributions seniors made to Western Australia.

“I am delighted to see so many organisations and community groups embracing BankWest Seniors Week. With so many community events being organised, it promises to be a week to remember,” she said.

“The Carpenter Government is committed to supporting events and activities that increase the health and wellbeing of WA’s seniors.”
