$36.5million to help reduce WA's greenhouse gas emissions.
9/11/2007 11:32 AM
The State Government is inviting Western Australian organisations to apply for the first round of grants from the $36.5million Low Emissions Energy Development (LEED) Fund.
Environment and Climate Change Minister David Templeman said that the fund was a key initiative in the target to cut the State’s 2050 greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent below 2000 levels.
“Greenhouse gas emissions will need to fall from about 70 million tonnes to 26 million tonnes by 2050,” Mr Templeman said.
“New low emissions technology will be critical in meeting this target.
“To help WA businesses and organisations meet this challenge, the Government has established a $36.5million Low Emissions Energy Development Fund.
“The fund will focus investment towards technologies where WA has distinctive natural and competitive advantages such as geothermal, bioenergy and clean coal technologies, as well as renewable energy generation such as wind, wave, tidal and solar power.
“Today, I am calling for applications for the first round of funding under the scheme, with about $8.5million being available to suitable projects in 2008-09.”
Successful applicants will be announced in the second quarter of 2008.
The Minister said that organisations interested in lodging funding applications would need to use an applications kit, which was available on the Department of Environment and Conservation’s website at
, by emailing
or phoning the Office of Climate Change on 6364 6500.
“It is clear that the world will be demanding low emissions technological solutions as we move to a low carbon economy,” he said.
“The LEED Fund is an exciting opportunity to further develop the State’s technological edge in this vital area and I look forward to businesses and other organisations joining with the Government in developing solutions that deliver for WA.
“The Carpenter Government is making decisions for the future and is leading the way in preparing WA to meet the challenges of our changing climate.”
