The Paraburdoo Swimming Pool was re-opened yesterday following the completion of an extensive upgrade, to which the State Government contributed $1million.

Pilbara Minister Jon Ford visited Paraburdoo today to officially re-open the pool.

A total of $1million worth of WA Government funding was allocated through the Pilbara Fund and the Pilbara Development Commission to the Shire of Ashburton to assist with the repair and upgrade of the pool.

The total cost of the upgrade was $2million, with the Shire of Ashburton and Pilbara Iron Ltd also contributing $500,000 each towards the upgrade.

Mr Ford said a recreational facility such as the Paraburdoo Swimming Pool was a boost for the local community and he congratulated the Pilbara Development Commission and the Shire of Ashburton on their efforts to undertake the project.

He said the provision of funding through the State Government’s Pilbara Fund was to assist Pilbara communities meet the increased demand on existing infrastructure and services from the current period of unprecedented economic growth in the region as a result of the expansion in the resource sector.

“The Pilbara Fund has already been the catalyst for some major changes in the Pilbara region”, the Minister said.

“Projects such as the upgrade of the Paraburdoo Swimming Pool will be welcomed by the community.”

Central Kimberley-Pilbara MLA Tom Stephens said the Paraburdoo pool was an important amenity for a community that experienced harsh summers.

“Paraburdoo summers can be unbearable at the best of times, so the upgrade of this pool will offer a much welcomed respite from the heat,” Mr Stephens said.
