Lake Jasper seed potato farm plans to increase export crop by $1.5million

Regional Development Minister Jon Ford today announced that the operators of Lake Jasper Certified Seed Potatoes, TP and RM Fox, had received a cheque for $165,000 to support the operator’s plans to increase its export crop.

The grant was provided through the State Government’s Regional Headworks Program and would assist with the cost of upgrading power supply to the Lake Jasper property, which is located in the Shire of Nannup.

The Minister said the upgrade would provide sufficient power service to the property to enable the construction of a packing shed and cool store and the installation of a computerised grading machine.

“The farm operators will adopt internationally recognised storing and handling technologies that are more efficient than those currently found in Australia. As a result, export seed production will be increased by 1,500 tonnes per annum, which is valued at $1.5million,” Mr Ford said.

Demand for potato seed is growing in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Mauritius, outstripping Australia’s current capacity to supply.

In presenting the cheque, South West MLC Matt Benson, said supporting the growth of Lake Jasper Certified Seed Potatoes would lead to the creation of up to 12 full-time employment positions.

“It will also create an estimated increase of $200,000 of expenditure at local businesses on parts, services and supplies,” Mr Benson said.

“These are significant outcomes for any small regional community.”

Lake Jasper Certified Seed Potatoes currently supplies local and interstate markets and has established export markets for its product in Indonesia, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.
