    Funding to assist Northam amalgamation effort

    5/10/2007 3:31 PM

    The first local government in the Wheatbelt region to undertake structural reform has received funding assistance to implement amalgamation strategies for the new Shire of Northam.

    Local Government Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today presented the Shire of Northam commissioner Gavan Troy with a cheque for $660,000.

    “The new Shire of Northam will be better placed to promote sustainable economic development and improve the delivery of services to residents,” Ms Ravlich said.

    “There will be increased opportunities to attract and retain specialist staff and strengthen important economic relationships between the shire’s rural and urban areas.

    “It is anticipated that there will be considerable savings each year from this reform initiative.”

    The Minister commended the excellent spirit of co-operation from both former local governments, the town and shire, which enabled the smooth transition to an amalgamated local government.

    The $660,000 was part of a total grant of $797,500 received by the Shire of Northam through the State Government’s Connecting Local Governments and Structural Reform program.

    The grant would assist with amalgamation costs, which included:
    • computer programming;
    • relocation and office design;
    • staff support and career program;
    • standardising of local laws;
    • planning support; and
    • administrative requirements.
