Betfair application to publish WA race fields not in the public interest

    11/10/2007 10:00 AM

Betting exchange operator Betfair has had its application to publish Western Australian race fields information rejected, Racing and Gaming Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich announced today.

The Minister’s decision to reject Betfair’s application to publish WA race fields is in line with new legislation that prohibits the operation of betting exchanges in Western Australia, due to the threat they pose to the integrity of racing in the State.

“The State Government’s legislation is not specifically about Betfair, but about betting exchanges generally whereby punters can back a runner to lose,” Ms Ravlich said.

“The integrity of the racing industries has to be protected at all costs.

“After serious consideration of these matters, I am of the view that it is not in the public interest to approve the application by Betfair.”

There are currently 96 wagering service providers throughout Australia and overseas who have received approval to publish WA race fields information.
