State Government funding supports main street upgrade for Coolgardie

    11/09/2007 2:00 PM

Regional Development Minister Jon Ford today presented the Shire of Coolgardie with a $100,000 cheque to assist with revitalising the streetscape of the town of Coolgardie. This is the first payment of a total commitment of $294,000.

Mr Ford said the upgrade would create a vibrant and lively environment, attractive to economic development and increased tourism opportunities.

When completed, the town centre of Coolgardie will feature improved street lighting and footpath design, attractive landscaping and heritage site markers highlighting the many buildings built in the 1890’s.

“Coolgardie is the nation’s best preserved gold mining town. The wide streets and grand buildings reflect the wealth and importance of the gold rush,” the Minister said.

“The proposed revitalisation aims to capitalise on these existing attractions, offering tourists a fascinating look at Western Australia’s history.

“Increasing tourist numbers obviously has positive flow-on effects to the businesses of Coolgardie and that is a great result for any regional community.”

The streetscape upgrade is a $2.1million dollar project to which the State Government is providing significant support, having previously contributed funding of $603,000.

This grant of $294,000 is provided from the State Government’s Regional Infrastructure Funding Program.

The Regional Infrastructure Funding Program is part of the Government’s $80million Regional Investment Fund, which has been established to assist with the economic and social development of the regions.

The streetscape improvements are well underway and all works are expected to be completed by next month.

“I congratulate the Shire of Coolgardie on their vision and innovation,” Mr Ford said.

“This is an excellent example of State and Local Government working together to improve the quality of services for Western Australians.”
