The State Government has identified land for a new caravan park at Kalbarri to help meet the needs of the growing number of tourists visiting the seaside destination.

Acting Planning and Infrastructure Minister Jon Ford said the 4.46ha site between Walker Avenue and Nanda Drive had been selected following consultation with the Shire of Northampton and other key stakeholders, including the tourism industry.

“The Shire of Northampton requested land be made available for the development of a caravan park to provide additional accommodation for tourists,” Mr Ford said.

“Kalbarri is an increasingly popular holiday location and the State Government is pleased to be working with the local community to meet the future needs of the town.”

The Minister said the site was supported by the town’s new planning scheme, which was the blueprint for the future development of Kalbarri.

“The site’s central location, coupled with its proximity to Kalbarri’s swimming beaches and other attractions, makes it an excellent development site,” he said.

“Expressions of interest will be called, giving potential developers an opportunity to outline their proposal for the site as a quality caravan park servicing the travelling public.

“The site will be offered for lease to the preferred developer and there will be conditions imposed to ensure the park caters for tourists rather than permanent residents or long-term visitors.

“It is intended the lessee will develop, construct and be responsible for the ongoing management of the caravan park.”

Mr Ford said expressions of interest would not be called until the Department for Planning and Infrastructure had negotiated with the registered native title claimants over the land.
