Agriculture and Food Minister Kim Chance has welcomed today’s Federal Government announcement to provide additional assistance to drought-affected farmers.
He said Western Australian farmers in the agricultural and Southern Rangeland regions were eligible to apply for part of the $430million interim drought assistance package.
“The announcement covers a very narrow spectrum of the full EC package,” Mr Chance said.
“The additional assistance only applies to the Centrelink component of the EC declaration, which provides income support for individual families who meet the Centrelink eligibility criteria.”
The Minister said WA would be submitting an application to the Federal Government this week for business interest rate subsidy assistance under Exceptional Circumstances.
“The application will cover areas affected by the current dry season,” he said.
“We are pleased with the Federal Government’s initiative to extend the current EC assistance measures, and expect this new application will be given equally as expedient consideration.”
Farmers have until September 2008 to lodge an application for Centrelink assistance.
More information on the assistance is available by contacting your local Centrelink office.
