Funding boost for Collie heritage railway precinct

    13/08/2007 12:00 PM

Regional Development Minister Jon Ford today announced that the Collie Heritage Group had received a $21,733 cheque to assist with the cost of providing a fire hydrant suitable water supply to Collie’s railway rolling stock display building.

The Collie heritage group is a voluntary organisation committed to creating a Collie heritage railway precinct, including a museum showcasing Collie’s rail and coal history.

The fire hydrant is required by the Building Code of Australia.

Works so far undertaken include the restoration of the Old Goods Shed, which is now used as an avenue for Collie’s fortnightly markets, the collection and maintenance of a large range of heritage railway items and the construction of the rolling stock display shed to house heritage stock.

“The Collie railway precinct is fast becoming the town’s focal point for both locals and visitors,” Mr Ford said.

“Meeting this building requirement will allow the railway rolling stock display shed to be set up to full display capacity and begin the pathway to operating as a fully fledged museum.”

Presenting the cheque in Collie today on behalf of Mr Ford, Member for Collie-Wellington MLA Mick Murray said the Collie heritage group was to be commended for its effort in developing this unique tourist attraction.

“The Collie heritage group has worked tirelessly to retain Collie’s valuable rail history and create an interesting and unique tourist attraction. I congratulate the volunteers on their efforts,” Mr Murray said.

The grant is provided through the State Government’s Regional Headworks Program, a component of the Carpenter Government’s $80million Regional Investment Fund.
