Not-for-profit organisations can now apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help them recruit and support volunteers.

Volunteering Minister Sue Ellery said the new Regional Volunteering Small Grants program aimed to increase involvement in volunteering and develop better volunteer education, training and management practices in rural and regional areas.

“The volunteering rates in our regional areas are excellent, however many regional and rural organisations have difficulty accessing the resources and support for volunteering that is available in the metropolitan area,” Ms Ellery said.

“These grants provide a great opportunity for grassroots organisations to develop innovative projects that will strengthen volunteering in their communities now and in the future.”

Only not-for-profit, incorporated, community-based organisations from regional and rural areas were eligible to apply for the grants.

The Ministere said small community groups were encouraged to combine resources to form joint initiatives which supported volunteering.

Applications must be received no later than 5pm on Friday, August 31, 2007.
