The North-West community of Roebourne will benefit from the appointment of a new sports and recreation development officer to be based at the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation in the town.

Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne Minister Jon Ford today announced a grant of $180,000 over three years towards the employment of the officer.

The funding was allocated from the Roebourne Enhancement Scheme, a $3.5million State Government program to improve the town’s visual and physical amenity.

“The Roebourne enhancement scheme has been a very successful Government initiative and the catalyst for substantial change in Roebourne,” Mr Ford said.

“Projects including major improvements to the main street and the development of the Roebourne Youth Precinct have made a real difference to the amenity of the town.”

The Minister said the project was another example of the Carpenter Government contributing to the life-blood of regional towns by ensuring that new facilities provided through schemes such as those in Roebourne were used to their maximum benefit.

“Last year, I had the pleasure of opening the Roebourne multi-use courts which have proved to be a resounding success with the young people in the community,” Mr Ford said.

“The new sports and recreation development officer will introduce a range of additional programs to engage the whole community in activities that will improve their wellbeing and contribute to making Roebourne a better place to live.”

The officer will be located with the foundation for a three-year period and has attracted additional funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation ($31,000), the Office of Crime Prevention ($60,000) and in-kind support from the Shire of Roebourne.

The foundation is providing office space and administrative support for the position.

The Minister congratulated the Roebourne community, the Board of the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation, Department of Sport and Recreation, Office of Crime Prevention and the Shire of Roebourne for their commitment to work in collaboration with the Pilbara Development Commission (PDC) to ensure the ongoing success of the projects delivered through the Roebourne enhancement scheme.

The Roebourne enhancement scheme will be delivered through the Pilbara Development Scheme, in partnership with the Roebourne community and the Shire of Roebourne.
