The State Government has called for tenders for the construction of a floating dock at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson.

Industry and Enterprise Minister Francis Logan said the floating dock was part of the $174million AMC expansion announced by Premier Alan Carpenter last year.

“The AMC is gaining an international reputation as Australia's leading industrial facility for marine-related industries and is already providing large returns for the Western Australian economy,” Mr Logan said.

“The request for tender seeks responses from organisations capable of undertaking the complete project, including the construction, integration and delivery of the floating dock.

“The Carpenter Government is committed to buying locally and a key aspect of the project is to maximise local content as much as possible.”

The Minister said Australian-based companies were increasingly becoming recognised for their capacity to deliver complex contracts, especially in the shipbuilding and oil and gas industries.

The floating dock was crucial to securing long-term maintenance work on the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Collins Class submarine fleet, as well as enhancing WA’s bid for ongoing defence contracts.

“The AMC’s premier shipbuilding capabilities ensure the complex is well-placed to provide for specialist companies involved in complex shipbuilding projects,” Mr Logan said.

“The construction of the floating dock, new transfer system and extension of the existing eastern wharf, will enhance the AMC’s ability to deliver these projects and reinforce its position as a market leader.”

The floating dock and associated infrastructure will be used to lift and transfer submarines and ships ashore for major maintenance. It will be capable of accommodating ANZAC Class frigates, commercial ship repair work, the super-yacht industry and sub-sea well-head testing for the oil and gas industry.

Since 2003, the AMC’s common user facility has been used to complete major shipbuilding contracts, such as Tenix Defence Australia’s conversion of the commercial tanker Delos into a naval replenishment vessel and the upgrade to weapons systems on the RAN ANZAC Class frigate fleet.

Tenders close on March 26. Tender information is available at the AMC’s Floating Dock Project Office on (08) 9437 0510.
