More than $420,000 is being provided to 29 local governments and schools in Western Australia under the State Government’s 2006-2007 Bus Shelter Grants Scheme.

Acting Planning and Infrastructure Minister Tony McRae said that across the State, 70 new bus shelters would be constructed with a further 16 existing shelters replaced.

“This scheme is an initiative of the Labor Government and is part of our Government’s commitment to improving the public transport experience,” Mr McRae said.

The grant scheme, which is now in its sixth year of operation, makes funding available to local governments to help upgrade and replace bus shelters.

“In the past, communities as far afield as Esperance, Broome, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Busselton had been provided with shelters under this scheme,” the acting Minister said.

"This latest announcement means that since this scheme was put in place, the Government has committed $2,324,284.04 to construct 447 new bus shelters and replace a further 61.

“Local councils are invited to apply and the State Government matches the contribution of successful applicants on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to $5,000 per shelter and $25,000 per application.”

Mr McRae said the primary aim of the scheme was to encourage the use of public transport through the provision of quality facilities for bus patrons.

A list of the grants follows. Inquiries about the bus shelters should be directed to the relevant local governments.
