All Western Australian workers have been urged not to forget the importance of workplace safety during the festive season and school holiday period.
Employment Protection Minister John Bowler warned that workers might lose concentration on safety issues due to the distractions of Christmas and holidays.
“I would like to remind everyone in WA workplaces to avoid taking shortcuts with safety this festive season,” Mr Bowler said.
“Please keep your mind on the job, and do not let the celebrations put you off your game.
“The penalty for dropping the ball on safety may be a visit to the casualty department, a stay in hospital or even worse - a sobering thought at Christmas.
“Statistics suggest that Australian workplaces are actually more dangerous than Australian roads and unfortunately, it is also quite common for workers to remain in ‘holiday mode’ after the festive season.
“A lack of proper attention to the task at hand - especially in the more hazardous areas - has been known to have tragic results.
“We all have the right to return home from work safe and healthy every day, and every worker in WA should take care not to take any short cuts or be distracted from safe work practices in the lead-up to Christmas.”
