The State Government has allocated $136,485 to help provide upgrades to the Esperance airstrip.

Goldfields-Esperance Minister John Bowler said the grant, received by the Shire of Esperance through the Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS), would be used for an asphalt overlay runway and a Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) taxiway.

The total project cost is estimated to be $1,765,000.

“This Government is helping building stronger regional communities and economies by investing in essential infrastructure,” Mr Bowler said.

“As well as providing proper access for community services, emergency evacuations and essential supplies, better airports create new opportunities for tourism development.”

The Minister said the grants had been approved as part of the 2006-07 round of the RADS, which would see almost $3million committed to 18 airport development projects valued at nearly $14million across the State.

The scheme funds up to 50 per cent of the cost of airport infrastructure planning and development projects.
