The State Government today announced that the Office of Citizenship and Civics will be wound up, effective December 31, 2006 and that its resources and functions would be incorporated into other areas.
Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Tony McRae said the work the office had done to set out standards for consultations between the community and Government was outstanding.
“When the office was set up in 2001, it had a very clear mission to transform interaction between the public sector and the community,” Mr McRae said.
“Over the past five years, it has improved processes to help large Government departments become more consultative and responsive.
“The Office of Citizenship and Civics’ list of achievements, including policy documents and a comprehensive range of guides, has significantly improved the Government’s interaction with the communities.
“It will now be the Public Sector Management Division (PSMD) of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet which will ensure consultative processes with communities are implemented across government.
“The Carpenter Government has some of the highest standards of community engagement in Australia as a direct result of Dr Gillgren and her dedicated and hard-working staff at OCC making Geoff Gallop's vision a reality.”
