    Minister announces public consultation process for Busselton Jetty project

    4/08/2006 12:56 PM

    South-West Minister Norm Marlborough today launched the public consultation phase on the future of the Busselton Jetty.

    The State Government, through the South West Development Commission (SWDC), is committing $500,000 to conduct a feasibility study and consultation process for the project.

    “We are now at the step in the process that will bring the public into the discussion on the potential for foreshore development,” Mr Marlborough said.

    The cost of the concept development and a detailed business plan for the proposed land development at Busselton, which could be used to assist in meeting the cost of refurbishing the jetty, is expected to be completed by the end of October.

    “This will help the Busselton Shire Council and the State Government to determine what land, if any, will be developed and what will be on that land,” the Minister explained.

    Investigations to be carried out in the coming months will include:
    • site contamination studies;
    • infrastructure studies;
    • engineering analysis, including traffic management issues; and
    • the heritage plan for the area.
    Today’s announcement adds to work already being done by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure and the Shire of Busselton on a detailed design for the reconstruction of the jetty.

    In addition, the SWDC, Tourism WA, the Shire of Busselton, the Busselton Jetty Environment and Conservation Association and the Geographe Bay Tourism Association, have been working on a tourism development plan which aims to maximise the revenue from the jetty for future maintenance.

    The SWDC and Tourism WA are spending $10,000 on a tourism marketing strategy while the Busselton Shire Council is funding engineering design for the jetty.

    The aim is to have a clear plan for the land endorsed by the shire and community by November.

    “I would like to thank both Adele Farina MLC and the Busselton Shire President, Kevin Douglas, for the pivotal role they have played in building a partnership between the Shire of Busselton and the State Government on this project,” Mr Marlborough said.
