In the wake of record fuel prices, the State Government is calling upon the Federal Government to support struggling families.

Minister assisting the Minister For Planning and Infrastructure Tony McRae said today that the Prime Minister should match the Carpenter Government’s gas subsidy commitment.

“The Carpenter Government has just doubled the payment for families to convert their vehicle from petrol to gas - up from $500 to $1000,” Mr McRae said.

“This is proof that we are helping families now - unlike the Federal Government, which is twiddling its thumbs and procrastinating.

“John Howard has to take some responsibility for fuel prices. He is the one who linked Australian pump prices to the international price of oil.

“John Howard and Peter Costello are finally talking about alternatives to petrol but while they are talking, we are acting!

“The Federal Government has previously discussed ethanol and bio-fuels, but while they are talking about fuel alternatives, they are also scheming at ways to skim a bigger cut for Canberra.

“Today, I call upon the Howard Government to match our gas subsidy payment dollar-for-dollar.”
