South-West Minister Norm Marlborough was in Capel today to open the 2006-07 round of Regional Development Scheme (RDS) funding, with applications being sought for projects that will benefit the community.

“I am delighted to be able to present the opportunity for worthwhile projects to share in $500,000 of State Government funding through the South West Development Commission,” Mr Marlborough said.

“We are looking for projects that show potential to improve the economic and social development, as well as the environment of the region.”

The last round of funding attracted 49 applications from across the South-West, with 18 receiving grants to launch community-based projects.

The redevelopment of the Capel Hall into a multi-purpose community centre was one of the projects to benefit from 2005-06 RDS funding.

The Minister today handed over $40,000 to the Shire of Capel to enable work to get under way.

“This project will deliver a fantastic asset for the whole town by providing a new venue for community activities which will bring people closer together,” he said.

The community centre will house a library, tourist information desk, telecentre services and historical displays, together with improved space for community groups and youth programs.

“What is unique about this centre is that it will also showcase the rich heritage of the Capel area and its traditional indigenous culture, as well as its farming and industrial history,” Mr Marlborough said.

In the five years the RDS has been operating $2.1million has been allocated to 100 projects across the South-West.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to get some of the region’s visionary projects off the ground with access to grants of between $5,000 and $150,000,” the Minister said.

“I urge all those groups with projects which work with the Carpenter Government’s goal of building a better future for all Western Australians, to apply.”

An information package, including guidelines and an application form, is available from the South West Development Commission’s website: or by phoning 9792 2000.

    Applications close August 31.
