Western Australian Multicultural Affairs Minister Tony McRae says selective quoting misrepresents WA’s submission to the Immigration and Multicultural Ministers’ Conference in Wellington, New Zealand, today.
“If Minister Vanstone selects quotes to suit her, she knows as well as all other Ministers attending the conference, she is not telling the whole truth,” Mr McRae said.
“The current industrial relations stance of the Federal Government is allowing the abuse of skilled migrants in the Australian workforce.
“WA has for years been one of the most successful migrant-friendly societies in the world and that is largely because local workers and skilled migrants are paid the same.
“That social contract with equality of wages has seen migrants establish themselves and their families on a firm financial footing.
“Workers in WA knew their pay rates were not going to be undercut by any migrants coming to our shores and that should not change.
“WA needs skilled migrants to ease the skills shortage which our V8 economy has given us, but not at the expense of fair pay and conditions.
“I urge Senator Vanstone to continue to support the entry of skilled migrants into the country, but to be paid at the same rate as local workers.”
