    Projects that make a real difference to the social and economic development of the Goldfields-Esperance region could benefit from a share of $500,000 through the Goldfields-Esperance Regional Development Scheme (GERDS)

    Goldfields-Esperance Minister John Bowler encouraged all groups with worthwhile projects throughout the region to apply for funding.

    “The scheme provides an important opportunity for local initiatives to receive financial support in the 2006-07 funding round,” Mr Bowler said.

    GERDS focuses on initiatives which:
    • develop and broaden the economic, social or environmental capacity of the region;
    • lead to the development of tourism and tourism-related products;
    • support co-operation and collaboration between local government and/or communities; and
    • facilitate access to and provision of employment, education and training.
    “Previous funding rounds have attracted a great deal of interest from the community and many worthwhile projects have already received State Government funding through the Regional Development Scheme”, the Minister said.

    GERDS has assisted many worthwhile projects since its introduction in 2001.

    Among the projects supported so far were the restoration and development of Hoover House, the Laverton Great Beyond Tourist Centre, the Esperance Skills Attraction Information Package and the Golden Quest Discovery Trail.

    Funds also assisted with seed potato grading and storage facilities, Main Street upgrade for Norseman, a tourism development plan for the Northern Goldfields, regional economic modelling programs, Bullenbuk Land Conservation and training project, Bay of Isles Aboriginal art and cultural display, Ngaanyatjarra media and communications centre, Menzies community playground, Shire of Coolgardie’s economic development and project officer and a Ravensthorpe project officer.

    The funding round is open until September 8 and applicants are urged to contact the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission on 9080 5004 for details of the scheme.
