The Carpenter Government has moved to establish a partnership with the Shire of Busselton to restore the Busselton Jetty.

South-West Minister Norm Marlborough met with members of the shire and its council today.

“I was delighted by the response and willingness to work in partnership on this project from this point on,” Mr Marlborough said.

“The partnership will see Busselton develop tourism opportunities which will not only create new jobs but will see visitors want to stay longer as a result of the revitalisation along the foreshore.”

The Minister was keen to meet with the shire council after receiving a working paper from the Busselton Jetty taskforce which explored redevelopment of land on the foreshore and town centre, in addition to other funding options.

Today’s preliminary meeting was to explore a partnership agreement between the shire and the State.

“There is an urgent need to start on the restoration of the jetty and we are looking to be able to begin work from December,” Mr Marlborough said.

Busselton Shire president Kevin Douglas said the council would be considering the proposals put to it as soon as possible.

“We are pleased the State Government has indicated that it is prepared to enter into a partnership with the Shire of Busselton in finding ways to restore the jetty,” Mr Douglas said

The funding model proposed by the shire also requires a one third funding component from the Federal Government.

“The Busselton Jetty is a tourism icon of international status and it is appropriate that the Federal Government commit funding to the jetty refurbishment,” Mr Marlborough said.
