Six traineeships and 12 scholarships awarded to metropolitan local governments
More than $200,000 invested through Metropolitan Local Government Youth Development Program
Young West Australians looking to further their careers in metropolitan local governments will reap the benefits from a $219,049 investment by the Liberal National Government.
Local Government Minister Paul Miles today announced 12 grants had been awarded to support scholarships for young local government employees to undertake training. Grants had also been awarded to support six new traineeship positions at four local governments.
"The Liberal National Government is pleased to be able to invest in new jobs and career development opportunities in the local government sector, which can provide a rewarding career for young West Australians," Mr Miles said.
"Young people will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and leadership capacity to further their career in local government and take on the leadership mantle in the future.
"This is important as it will not only retain young people who are experienced in service delivery but will also help attract young people who may not have otherwise thought about a career in local government.
Among the successful local governments to receive scholarships is the City of Melville, which will use its funding to support a recreation development officer to undertake a Diploma of Project Management.
The course will enable the officer to further their career in sport and recreation while assisting the City with delivering their strategic plans through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and fit-for-use recreation facilities.
The Minister said the scholarships and traineeships would help meet the local government's long-term strategies by providing a young skilled workforce.
"These scholarships and traineeships are aligned to each local government's strategies and vision, and will help ensure they have adequately skilled professionals to deliver on these targets," Mr Miles said.
