Planning Minister Donna Faragher today announced the State Government's support for rezoning almost 11 hectares of land in Kalamunda from Parks and Recreation to Urban, through an amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme.
Mrs Faragher said all public submissions had been carefully considered, including environmental and bushfire-management concerns, and approval was given on the recommendation of the Western Australian Planning Commission.
Potential risks were considered by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services which approved a fire management plan. The Environmental Protection Authority considered the amendment and decided it did not require assessment.
Future development of the site will be subject to Commonwealth environmental assessment and approval.
Located close to the Kalamunda town centre with access to water and sewerage infrastructure, the Wilkins Road site has been identified by the Shire of Kalamunda as a viable site for aged-care accommodation in both its local planning and aged-accommodation strategies.
Finalisation of the amendment process will allow for the preparation of a local scheme amendment by the Shire of Kalamunda, detailed structure planning, and subdivision and development applications.
