Steel sector set for new industry grants

    2/12/2016 6:30 AM
    • New funding for WA's steel fabricators, galvanisers and finishers
    • Businesses offered support for certification to new national standard
    • Up to $10,000 each in funding or majority of certification costs

Western Australia's steel fabricators, galvanisers and finishers are eligible for funding under the 11th round of the Liberal National Government's Industry Facilitation and Support Program.

Commerce Minister Michael Mischin said the program had helped Western Australian small and medium sized enterprises hire more staff and improve their competitiveness, capacity and capability to deliver steelwork to major markets since 2011.

Mr Mischin said funding from the latest round aimed to support the steel industry in its efforts to meet new national requirements for the fabrication of structural steelwork.

Companies will be eligible for up to $10,000 in funding or 75 per cent of certification costs for the new requirements, which will be introduced next week by the Australian Steel Institute.

"The steel industry is a highly competitive business in WA and the sector is under increasing pressure from cheaper imports, particularly from China," the Minister said.

"Local fabricators have a well-established track record in delivering reliable, value-for-money products and the State Government is committed to ensuring they have appropriate opportunities to enter significant supply chains."

Mr Mischin said the new standard had the potential to improve WA's investment and operating environment, given its emphasis on risk management, traceability and accountability.

"The new national standard has been introduced to improve local companies' attractiveness in important markets such as resources, tourism, government and defence," he said.

"The Liberal National Government is committed to further growing the industry and securing local jobs for decades to come."
