- Five older suburbs transformed and living environments enhanced
- 478 homes refurbished for sale and retention as social housing
- 776 residential lots developed for home ownership opportunities
The Liberal National Government is today celebrating the completion of a decade-long urban renewal program that has transformed five older suburbs in the Town of Port Hedland.
Housing Minister Brendon Grylls said the Government's South Hedland New Living project started in 2006 and has revitalised the suburbs of Cassia, Koombana, Lawson, Shellborough and Walnut Grove.
"The South Hedland New Living project has been a joint effort between the Housing Authority and Jaxon, who have worked tirelessly with the Town of Port Hedland to create an attractive and revitalised community that people are proud to call home," Mr Grylls said.
"The program has transformed older public housing estates, created more attractive living environments, reduced public housing density and encouraged home ownership, as well as provided hundreds of jobs.
"It has enhanced the sense of community for those who call these suburbs home today."
In total, 478 homes have been refurbished for sale or retention as social housing, and 776 residential lots have been developed over the last decade, along with the beautification and enhancement of streetscapes and parks.
"During the peak of the mining construction boom, some properties in South Hedland attracted rent of above $2,000 per week," the Minister said.
"The Liberal National Government's vision for South Hedland was to provide quality and affordable housing options for the community during a time when there were excessive demands for workers and housing.
"This project has delivered great outcomes for residents during a challenging period in the Pilbara's history, and is widely recognised as one of the biggest and most successful urban renewal projects ever undertaken in regional Australia."
The South Hedland New Living project took out the UDIA Award for Excellence in the Urban Renewal category in 2010, 2011 and 2014.
