    • Water Corporation has begun community consultation in Cue

The communities of Cue, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet and Sandstone will receive improved water quality through an $8 million Liberal National program, Water Minister Mia Davies announced today.

Ms Davies said the Water Corporation was working with local communities to address elevated levels of nitrates in drinking water as well as the 'hardness' of the local water supply.

"Through this program, we will work with the community to improve local water quality as well as addressing naturally occurring nitrates," she said.

Nitrates are caused by underlying rock conditions that affect the quality of drinking water sourced from local bores in these towns.

"Through this new program, the corporation's goal is to determine the best water treatment technology to improve the aesthetic quality and make it safer for everyone in the community to drink," the Minister said.

Currently, bottle-fed infants under three months of age must use bottled water. This is available from the Shire of Murchison and local nursing post.

The corporation will also work with the four local communities to improve aesthetic water quality, which can be affected by scaling and hard water.

Improving water quality in the Murchison will be community-led, with local customer challenge panels established in each town to gauge feedback on the different treatment solutions explored.

"I encourage community members not only in Cue, but in Meekatharra, Mount Magnet and Sandstone, to contact the corporation to register interest in joining a local customer panel," Ms Davies said.

The corporation has already installed water treatment units at Wiluna and Leonora, with a new system being commissioned in Yalgoo to reduce the levels of nitrates in water supplies.
